It was small and looked a little like an outdoor charcoal grill, all shiny and round. When it spoke I realized it was not an errant flying charcoal grill, but a curious creature from a galaxy far away.

On my worst nights I see a vision of unregulated surreal sprawl as we cling to outmoded ideas of prosperity and growth.
Riding the Hogback Highway

We could have driven faster, more sterile I-26, but taking the old highway has its advantages and insights.
